In two weeks time the annual Liberty Health Rhodes Trail Run will once again be the focus of attention for over 300 endurance athletes and their families.
The Rhodes Trail Run has grown in stature over its 21 years to be recognised as one of the premier endurance events in the country. The harsh conditions and cold together with its reputation for outstanding organisation have made it a ‘must run' event. Rhodes home owner, Evie Raubenheimer, who is much loved and respected by her runners, is the person who keeps Rhodes on the world endurance map.
The influx of visitors over the trail run weekend generates welcome income for the many involved with the tourism industry in Rhodes and surrounds. The events reputation ensures not only a full field but also a waiting list to participate.
The impact this annual event has on the Rhodes economy is significant, especially in these belt-tightening times.
It is estimated that, over the race week, approximately 2000 bed nights are booked specifically because of the trail run. The additional turn over from fuel sales, meals, bar sales and incidentals, such as art work, is not insignificant. The trail run is also a major fund raiser for the Rhodes Christian School who cater for the runners on the Friday evening and on the Saturday.
