‘Mustang Sally’ is firmly entrenched in Rhodes Trail Run folk lore.

If you know why, you have an outstanding knowledge of our history, legends and traditions. If you were there, then golly! You have been with us a long time!

For those unsure if what they have heard whispered is more legend than truth, Wilson Pickett’s ‘Mustang Sally’ was instrumental (apologies!), De Wydeman does play a leading role and both are locked in the collective memory of many. The whispers are probably all true, possibly even understated … maybe!

An often whispered rumour we can dispel is that in 2001, when snow lay thick in the kloof and ‘up high’ on race day, a ’65 Mustang was seen at Lesotho View.

There have been many memorable sights over our more than three decades such as this ‘Stellar performance’ https://www.rhodesrun.za.net/news/1623-a-stellar-performance but a ’65 Mustang ‘up high’ is not one of them.

And ‘Mustang Sally’, well let’s say that she will always remain a much loved song and one of the kaleidoscope of memories since our first Rhodes Run in 1989.

The only ‘mustang’ you may see ‘up high’ will probably be a cousin of this Rhodes village Equus caballus.
