The kloof beat all-comers again this year.
The best time to Mavis Top remains Dirkie Moolman's 1:53 and after 32 years only Dirkie, Jannie le Roux, Rodwell Sims and Uys Grundling have run under 2-hours.
Every year the route through the kloof, and hence the distance, changes, but then our Rhodes Run (especially through the kloof and over the "Tufts of Terror") is never the same distance. Entrants are warned, distance at Rhodes varies.
Race distance, conditions underfoot and the different weather conditions, sometimes changing during the day, mean that each year can be a new experience, a whole new event for runners and crew alike. This was vividly recalled the day before our run this year by David Conradie (Snowflake No 1066) when he described 2014, the year the front runners did not see any sign of snow, while the middle to back of the pack ran through calf deep and falling snow 'up high'.
Even though there was no snow in the kloof this year, the kloof and Mavis retained their sub 2-hour rarity.
