The kloof section is always a challenge, eyes down and looking Bingo style as you gingerly cross those ice covered rocks in the snow-melt fed rivers and clamber up the hillside.

Back in 2003 the track 'up top' along the Lesotho border was in quite a poor state - in places easier to run in the veld than  on the track.

Can you imagine crossing the rivers with your eyes closed, and continuing all the way through the kloof to the quarry with your eyes closed?

In 2003 Derick Carter, ably led by his guide Ken Henderson, did just that. Derick is the only blind runner, after long discussions with the organisers who were concerned about his safety, to have attempted and completed the course.

Probably the most heartfelt medal ever awarded at the UTi Rhodes Trail Run in the past 23 years.
