2013 Rhodes Trail Run and DMK Social Responsibility:
As preparation began for the 2013 Rhodes Trail Run, we were left undecided as to what we could do for the town of Rhodes. Last year we underwent re-painting the classrooms of the Rhodes Public School as well as decorating them with educational material and in our eyes, ended up transforming the rooms to an environment suitable for learning. One of the things we did not do (time not permitting) was re-doing the staff room and giving something back to the teachers. In addition, we noticed that a lot of the doors did not have locks and a few were closed merely by the use of rock/s.
Therefore, this year we decided to finish off where we started. We prepared to re-do the staff room, put latches and locks on all the classrooms as well as give the kids a little “surprise”.
Needless to say we underestimate the task each year and we spent a total of 1 ½ days completing what we set out to do. The staff room appeared to have been used as more of a storage facility than anything else, with little to no place for the teachers to sit and share in cup of coffee. And so, “operation teachers” began.
With each lick of paint and re-arrangement of furniture, the staff room began to take shape. It was a total transformation. A new paint job, a couple of wall stickers, re-arrangement of furniture and re-organisation of learning material and the end result speaks for itself. The new urn and mugs, as well as variety of teas and coffees will help keep the teachers warm on those cold mornings. In addition, the basic first aid kit will assist with the mending of any bumps and scrapes the kids will get with the newly installed GOAL POSTS AND NETBALL POST (the surprise).
All the classrooms were left safely secure and the new locks and latches acted as a good replacement for the previous rocks.
Overall, the entire project was a success and we were ecstatic as to the transformation that took place. We hope the teachers enjoy what was done as much as we enjoyed doing it for them. The teachers are the heart of the school and it was only appropriate to give something back as a token for all their hard work.
